Case Study: Cllr Georgia Astbury

Cllr Georgia Astbury, North East Lincolnshire Council, elected 2021

I think everyone starts off their journey as a councillor for one of two reasons - passion for people, or passion for place. For me, it was both. Learning of the opportunity to represent my ward - Immingham, the ward in which I grew up - seemed to be something that was meant for me. The community is like nothing I’ve ever experienced, or ever seen. It is something to be extremely proud of. The ward itself, the history it holds, the opportunities it brings, is fantastic.

I believed that, in representing the ward and its people, I could do it justice.

Looking back at the past few months, I don’t think anyone can ever prepare you for life as a new councillor. Everyone’s journey is probably very different - different places and people! However, I will say this; a little passion and a lot of determination will get you very far. Those people that put the X next to your name, it is only fair that you do right by them and give your ward everything you have, and strive for greatness in every change you make - big or small! Whether you’re sitting in someone’s house, brew in hand, discussing their bin collections, or you’re sat in a full council meeting debating what you may consider much bigger issues... they are one and the same.
